Make a list of everything! It will seem unnecessary now, but when it comes to moving, it’s better to be over prepared than under prepared. Do this before you jump into packing anything away. Decide which possessions you are taking to your new home, and where you will put the larger items when you get there. A floor plan of your new home may help with this. Create a system that works for you, whether its colour coded post-its or an excel spreadsheet to keep track of things. It can be as simple as numbering the boxes and writing what you pack in each box.
- Book in advance.
It is always best advised to book your removal well in advance as then there can be no hidden extra costs. The last thing you want is to ring up a few days before your removal and find that the most competitive removal company is all booked out and your having to go with one that would not initially have been your first choice.
- Have plenty of supplies.
You will think you only need a few boxes but no one ever knows how much ‘stuff’ they really have until they need to pack everything away. Make sure you have more than you think will be needed. Don’t forget the small yet very important things like tape & tissue paper. And of course you will need lots of bubble wrap and protective sheets to make sure none of your belongings come to any harm. All of this can be supplied by Budget if needed.
- Colour co-ordinate / Label Boxes
Do not forget to label each box with the room name that they are going into or equally efficient is designating a colour for each room in the new home. Apply colour stickers on the box near the box number. In your new home put a matching sticker on the door to each room. Our movers will know where to put everything when they arrive at the destination. It's also helpful to post a big sign on the wall in the room where you want boxes stacked, for example boxes here or fragile stickers on boxes including fragile items.
- Keep things together.
It makes life so much harder when you can’t find that remote that’s for your TV. Or you’ve found the plates but not the cutlery. So remember to packing theses bits together to avoid confusion later. If there are ‘bits and pieces’ that could be used for anything have a box labelled ‘bits’ or ‘parts’. Then you’ll have only one place to look when you can’t find that extension lead you need.
- Pack well in advance.
The last few days live out of a suitcase, with only the essentials and the first few things you’ll need in your new home.
- Use you suitcases to pack things
Saves on boxes and you will find you remember what items you put in which bag easier than if it is in a cardboard box.
